Model Car
24 Jan

We recently watched a movie on how cars are manufactured. The video detailed the steps all the way from the initial design, to the finished product, even showing how robots are used to carry out many of the steps of manufacturing. The first steps the movie discussed, when making a new car, is to draw a design of the car on paper. Then, a scaled down version of the car is built out of clay.
Silas was intrigued by the idea of making a car out of clay, and decided he wanted to design his own car. He never was really interested in Matchbox cars, but suddenly the idea of having his own model car was all he was talking about.
For Silas, the idea of choosing where the doors went, how many windows there would be and especially what color the car would be, all interested him greatly.
My Kids Make a Model Car, and yours can too! Find out what Silas created, then start your own:
First, Silas drew a picture of his car:

Then he started modeling the car. It turned out that we had no clay, so he used playdough instead!

We set the model car aside to dry. {You can place it in the oven at a low temp to dry as well}. Then once it was dry, Silas used markers to “paint” it. {You could also use paint here, but Silas didn’t want to because he liked his marker colors better}.

Vroom, vroom….hope you have fun creating your own model car. We would love to see what you came up with, so send in your pictures!

I’m always amazed at the effort kids will go to for something that they really care about. Great work here. The detail is fantastic.
Looks great painted, Silas, good job. Can I have a ride?
@will: I know, isn’t it amazing the focus that kids can have if they are truly interested?? amazing. thanks for the comments, hope all is well.
I love the colors, I wish I had a car that color.
Silas, you made an awesome car model.
I like how you thought about how the car would look, drew the design and then made the model from clay.
The colors you painted the car make it look soooo good.
Hugs and Kisses.
Thanks for the sweet words. I will pass them on to Silas!
Oh WOW WOW WOW!! I love how he drew the car first and then spent ages making it! HOW WONDERFUL! What a clever boy! LOVE IT!
