Butterfly Counting Game

21 Feb

The past two days have been warmer {50′s} bringing with it the hope of spring and the desire for this long winter to finally be over.  I can almost see a patch of grass in my yard, and it has me longing to run around in flip flops.

All this talk of spring reminds me of our invasion of butterflies from last year. Do you remember?  I eventually took down all those butterflies, but kept them with the hope of reusing them {somehow}.  This week, the warmer weather had me in the mood for some spring projects, so I thought it was time to bring out the butterflies. I put them to good use with a counting game!

My Kids Make a Butterfly Counting Game, and yours can too! Find out more:

Silas took the butterflies and wrote a number on each one. We started with 1-10 {but can easily expand past that since we still have a lot of butterflies}.

Then we lined up the numbered butterflies, and the kids counted out the corresponding number of butterflies and lined them up above the written number.

The game itself is not complex {in creation} but it is very effective in allowing the kids to see quantity correlating to the written numbers. {And it did get Silas  writing his numbers, but sshhh! don’t tell him. He didn’t realize he was “working”}.

David’s teacher just had the kids do this same thing with valentine’s day candy hearts (GF/DF) and they got to eat some when they were done. Very clever!!!
