Salt and Art
8 May
We recently did a project called “Art with Spices”, and it had us thinking about other food related items we could create Art with.
Silas had the idea of using Salt.
And so we did.
The beauty of this project is that it requires only a few items, all of which you probably already have on hand:
Salt. Colored chalk. Paper. Glue.
My Kids Make “Salt & Art” and yours can too! Get out your salt shakers…….
Making colored salt is very simple. Pour salt into a zip lock bag and toss in a piece of colored chalk.
Have your kids rub the chalk around in the bag until the salt is the desired color.

Spread glue over a drawing (do not leave globs of glue, try to spread it out evenly).

Then sprinkle the salt over the drawing.

Lay the pictures flat to dry.
{Salt will flake and rub off when you hang them, just to be warned.}
I have a little salt on the floor underneath our hanging masterpieces.

But, in my mind, the beauty of these “Salt & Art” projects far outweighs the crunch of salt under my feet.
~Happy creating!

Welcome to My Kids Make. I'm Becky, mom to 2 cuties, Sydney and Silas.

This is super cool:)
Beautiful art.
What a clever idea and project.
Silas and Sydney your salt art pictures are beautiful.
I will hang some on my wall.
Really cute idea and Silas and Sydney, you did a great job! xo
Aaah this looks lovely! How great to use such different “art materials”! Great for exploration and developing that little artist!
Thank you for sharing on Kids Crafts Party!

Love this- I’m going to use it with my preschool class this week! Maybe you can try spraying the finished drawings with hairspray to make the glue stay- that’s what we used to use in art class whenever we did projects with pastels and other flaky materials.
What a neat idea. I love projects that spring from storecupboard items. Thanks for sharing.
very cute idea i might try this one with my son.
It’s not as much fun but you can use food coloring to color the salt as well it will give more brilliant colors than the chalk does.
I really love this! Thank you for sharing this wonderful idea, i teach kids (pre-school) and this will be one of the fun activities to do.
Just stopping by to let you know that I have featured your project on Fun Family Crafts! You can see it here
